INSET days and Class Visits

Helping to deliver the curriculum

INSET days

Lego resources and a trainer can be hired from Croydon libraries for INSET days.
Training is available on the following Lego Education programmes:

StoryStarter

LEGO EducationLEGO® Education StoryStarter is the helping hand that kick-starts pupils’ creativity and boosts their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills at Key Stages 1 and 2.

Pupils work together to create and build stories with LEGO bricks and figures, then use the unique StoryVisualizer Software to visualise, write and communicate their work.

StoryStarter is a hands-on tool that also inspires students to collaborate while creating and communicating their stories. It is an innovative way of teaching a wide range of essential skills, including:

  • Literacy skills, improving writing, language, and reading abilities.
  • Communication skills, including speaking, listening, and presentation capabilities.
  • Collaboration skills and pupils’ ability to work in teams.
  • Comprehension skills and enabling pupils to compose new stories or analyze existing ones.
  • Integrating the use of digital tools via the unique StoryVisualizer Software.

MoreToMaths

MoreToMaths is a hands-on educational maths resource for Key Stage 1 pupils.  By using the familiar LEGO® brick coupled with real life understanding, your pupils will feel encouraged and motivated to think, write and speak freely about maths. MoreToMaths includes curriculum activities for 48 lessons, defined by the latest National Curriculum standards. Through the activities, pupils help the two characters Max and Mia to solve problems within four real life themes, and they collaboratively experience that there is more to maths than facts.

WeDo

LEGO® Education WeDo is a fantastic, simple-to-use tool that enables students to learn, construct and then bring their models to life.

WeDo covers all national standards and comes with a cross-curricular plug 'n' teach curriculum pack that improves communication, collaboration and team building skills.

WeDo helps teach how technology plays an active role in the students' everyday life and is an ideal product for teaching across different subjects at primary levels such as Computing, Science, Social Studies, Language, Technology and Engineering. E.g. explore Science by building wild animals and making them come to life using LEGO Education WeDo as an introduction to programming.

BuildTo Express

LEGO® Education BuildToExpress empowers students of all abilities to creatively communicate their thoughts and feelings. Students are tasked with buildings models that illustrate their understanding of various curriculum concepts: How they “see” democracy or how they visualize a historic event. As there are no right or wrong answers with LEGO Education BuildToExpress it is also an excellent way to handle interpersonal issues arising in class, allowing students to convey their own personal feelings in a constructive manner.
Learning values:

  • Enables students to communicate more effectively
  • Encourages introspection/reflection
  • Gives an equal voice to all students
  • Enhances creative and critical-thinking skills
  • Supports 21st Century Learning Skills
  • Improves problem-solving
  • Promotes a cooperative learning environment

Simple & Powered Machines

Simple & Powered Machines from LEGO® Education is a hands-on tool that helps students in upper Key Stage 2 and beyond investigate everything from basic mechanical principles to advanced motor-powered machines while also acquiring key insights in science, maths, engineering, and technology.

Machines & Mechanisms

Science, Maths, Design & Technology and Information & Control Technology. Help your students deepen their understanding of how forces affect motion and explore concepts of energy. As they gain experience, students can build more complex mechanisms and use them to make accurate observations, measurements and records; and even design their own solutions.

LEGO® MINDSTORMS®

With LEGO® MINDSTORMS®  students can build robots and use software to plan, test and modify sequences of instructions from a variety of real life robotic behaviours. They gather and analyse data from sensors using data logging functionalities such as graph view. Robotics is an exciting way to bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics to a classroom.

Ignite student engagement and energize learning through real-life problem solving. Engage your students in Computer Science, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Boost learning curves and help all your students reach their curriculum targets.

Class visits to the library

Croydon libraries are offering a unique experience with their Lego class visits. Teachers are invited to bring their class to the library and combine a visit to the library with a Lego session using LEGO® Education StoryStarter.

Using the building plates, bricks and special elements, pupils create their story a scene at a time, bringing their ideas to life. Once completed they then use the StoryVisualizer Software to write their story in a variety of visual styles and import the images of the scenes they have made.
Storytelling, within a supportive structure, is a powerful tool for improving literacy and encouraging pupils to communicate confidently. Sequencing events in a natural order promotes understanding and stimulates the imagination, encouraging creativity and helping pupils to come up with innovative new ideas.
Half the class will have hands on experience of Storyteller, while the other half will be accompanied by the teacher in the library.  Half way through the session the two groups will change over.

Times:  9.30am - 11.00am
Charges: £200 per class visit
For further information and to book a visit please contact ccslegoCroydon@carillionservices.co.uk
